THE MAGIC FLUTE (Die Zauberflöte)
The Magic Flute is Mozart’s last opera. The first performance was in Vienna in 1791. The Queen of Night gives Prince Tamino an assignment to save her daughter from the power of Sarastro. On his way to Sarastro, Tamino is given a magic flute to help him escape all ticklish situations. When Tamino arrives there, he realises that Sarastro’s realm represents good tenets, friendship, harmony and love. Tamino consents to many trials in order to get into this realm of freedom and to win himself Pamina whom he loves dearly. A parallel but lighter plot tells about Papageno, a bird-catcher and Tamino’s travelling companion. Also Papageno has to pass certain tests to have and hold his beloved Papagena. |
